Sport can make great TV
There is no denying that we have had an amazing summer of Sport. The Euros, The Olympics, The Paralympics, Wimbledon, The Hundred…I know I’ve probably missed something.
Whilst I work in the sector, and my daughter loves playing any sport (well apart from football), Sport isn’t often something we watch on the TV. Things however changed this summer most notably because of the sports presentation of The Paralympics and The Hundred.
I never really ‘got’ cricket but now I sort of understand thanks to The Hundred. It’s done what I am sure the ECB set out to achieve with the new fast paced format with a focus on entertainment. The BBC commentators were funny and engaging, the onscreen graphics attention grabbing. I’m not sure I will be booking any tickets to a one day series anytime soon, but attending The Hundred next time…count me in.
However, it’s C4’s coverage of the Paralympics which should be applauded. It engaged, explained and entertained every evening. It made my 11year old more interested in the athletes and the competition than its able-bodied counterpart. Sitting down nightly to watch Ade Adepitan’s round up of the action was not to be missed. She asked questions, wanted to understand the classification system and delighted in Team GB success. She of course saw their disabilities, but more importantly she saw great sporting ability and achievements. Job done!
